WHAT IS THE ACADEMIC MASTER’S DEGREE IN REHABILITATION SCIENCES?

Unique in Rio de Janeiro, the Academic Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Sciences at UNISUAM is recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC) and recommended by CAPES since 2009. Due to its multidisciplinary approach, it is directed to all professionals involved in rehabilitation, such as Physiotherapists, Health Fitness Professionals, Occupational Therapists, Nutritionists and Physicians, the UNISUAM Master’s Degree course provides the student with technical-scientific bases for research and teaching, making them able to carry out teaching activities in graduate level and research activities.

In addition, the course is part of the Postgraduate Program in Rehabilitation Sciences of UNISUAM, which also counts on the Doctorate and Post-Doctorate to provide you with training even more complete.

THEORY AND APPLIED RESEARCH IN ONE PROGRAM

The Academic Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Sciences covers functional studies of sports and sports performance and rehabilitation until the improvement strategies for promotion, prevention and insertion in public health policies, including the technological development of systems and equipment.

Interdisciplinary Teaching

The Rehabilitation Sciences Program is the only Master’s Degree course at Rio de Janeiro state with a multidisciplinary approach. This configuration enables the interdisciplinary training of independent researchers and teachers from different academic backgrounds, who work or intend to work with rehabilitation and health promotion, articulating teaching and research.

INNOVATION

In addition to the traditional study areas - Functional Assessment in Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Approach in Rehabilitation – the Program has also the study area of Rehabilitation in Sport and Adapted Sport, which includes the study of interventions to prevent and recover injuries from adapted sports practice and optimize the functional performance of athletes and para-athletes.

DIVERSIFIED STUDY AREAS

The Academic Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Sciences has its study area focused on the Functional Aspects of Rehabilitation. The purpose of this area is to analyze the processes involved in functional responses, assessment methods and techniques, as well as the investigation of the effectiveness of interventions related to the prevention and physical rehabilitation of organic systems in the individual and population level.

COMITE DE ÉTICA

A UNISUAM busca através da formação do seu Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa constituir um espaço de reflexão e disseminação dos princípios éticos estabelecidos através da resolução 196/96 entre os pesquisadores da Instituição, orientando e monitorando os projetos para proteger o sujeito da pesquisa. Para tal, e de acordo com orientação do CONEP, sua composição é multidisciplinar, com contribuição de profissionais de várias áreas do conhecimento, da participação de pesquisadores e de representante de usuários.

O referido Comitê foi criado pelo Magnífico Reitor através da resolução 005/05 e aprovado pelo Conselho Nacional de Ética em Pesquisa (CONEP) em 10 de abril de 2006, através da Carta no. 341 CONEP/CNS/MS.

Em novembro de 2006, o Comitê de Ética da UNISUAM foi aprovado para treinamento no SISNEP, passando então a fazer parte do mesmo. Mantendo um calendário de reuniões mensais, o CEP da UNISUAM cumpre sua função consultiva, deliberativa e educativa sobre ética em pesquisa com seres humanos.

Seus membros são voluntários para execução desta tarefa e visando à capacitação de seus membros foi realizado o I Curso de Bioética da UNISUAM e I Encontro de Ética em Pesquisa da UNISUAM, no dia 11 de novembro de 2006. O CEP da UNISUAM realiza reuniões mensais, em que são avaliados os projetos recebidos. Informações adicionais:

THERAPEUTIC APPROACH IN REHABILITATION

Study of primary, secondary and tertiary health care, considering the characteristics of the different population and their insertion into public health policies. Study of the effect of therapeutic interventions on functional capacity and quality of life in the developmental stages, aiming at the rehabilitation of disorders in different populations.

FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT IN REHABILITATION

Study of the functional aspects of the health-disease process in different populations, considering the biopsychosocial dimensions (morphological, biomechanical, physiological, pathophysiological, cognitive, emotional and participation). Development and validation of procedures and technologies for functional assessment in rehabilitation.

REHABILITATION IN SPORTS AND ADAPTED SPORTS

Study of the physiological, biomechanical and functional aspects related to the practice of sports and adapted sports, and the optimization of performance, covering recreational and professional practitioners in all age groups.

Study of the risk factors and protection of injuries from sports practice and the effects of interventions for their prevention, recovery and rehabilitation in several populations.

Laboratory of Performance of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems

This laboratory is used to assess the pulmonary and cardiovascular function of healthy subjects and those with respiratory and/or cardiovascular diseases, as well as of other specific populations that require a more comprehensive health assessment, including the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Laboratory of Human Movement Analysis

In this laboratory, resources and equipment are used to evaluate the skeletal muscle function, particularly strength and resistance to fatigue, with emphasis on subjects with orthopedic diseases and other populations that require a more comprehensive assessment of the skeletal muscles function.

Laboratory of Muscle-skeletal Performance

This laboratory is equipped with optical motion analysis systems, allowing the accomplishment of biomechanical analyzes by two-dimensional and three-dimensional movement analysis at different scales, from small (e.g., finger joints or face) to large (e.g., walking or running) aspects.

Laboratory of Neurosciences In Rehabilitation

This laboratory is equipped with devices for the physical rehabilitation of patients with neurological diseases and their sequelae, such as Parkinson's disease, including recovery of motor control, sensitivity and gait.

Laboratory of Computational Simulation and Modeling in Rehabilitation

In this laboratory, computers and latest generation programs are used to process and analyze biomedical signals from the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as from the neuromuscular system. In this laboratory, computer programs are also developed for simulations and analysis of these signals.

Laboratory of Kinetics and Human Kinematics

In this laboratory, research projects are conducted to assess static and dynamic postural control, including the assessment of the mechanical forces acting on the body and the muscular activity during motor tasks. Static posture assessments are also performed using computerized photogrammetry.

Laboratory of cardiopulmonary performance during exercise

This laboratory performs the assessment of the cardiopulmonary system during activities of submaximal and maximum physical stress, attending mainly to sports and adapted sports, as well as healthy individuals and with other diseases with impact in these systems.

This laboratory develops and uses virtual reality technology to analyze dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system in order to propose interventions for a variety of health conditions.

Projeto SuiteTCM

Medicina integrativa para pesquisa científica e prática clínica

As práticas médicas chinesa e ocidental contemporânea evoluíram a partir de diferentes culturas e contextos históricos e, portanto, seus conhecimentos médicos representam essa divergência cultural. A informatização da medicina tradicional chinesa (MTC) tem promovido a medicina integrativa para organizar, processar e integrar o conhecimento de anatomia, fisiologia, semiologia, patofisiologia e terapia da MTC.

O Projeto SuiteTCM foi proposto como uma coleção de modelos computacionais integrados, principalmente advindos das ciências da epidemiologia e estatística para informatização da pesquisa científica e prática clínica em MTC para todos os níveis de prevenção. O programa inclui módulos para:

· Simulação de casos (SimTCM);

· Análise e validação de banco de dados (SciTCM);

· Organização de dados (DataTCM);

· Exame clínico e diferenciação de padrões (DiagTCM), incluindo inspeção da língua (TongueTCM) e palpação do pulso (PulseTCM);

· Seleção da intervenção terapêutica em acupuntura (AcuTCM), medicina herbal (HerbsTCM) e dietética (DietTCM);

· Organização de prontuários clínicos (ProntTCM);

· Investigação epidemiológica de dados amostrados (ResearchTCM);

· Educação, treinamento e avaliação de conhecimentos médicos (StudentTCM).

O Projeto SuiteTCM deve contribuir para o desenvolvimento permanente da medicina integrativa e a aplicabilidade da MTC em pesquisa científica e atenção à saúde internacionalmente. O programa SuiteTCM é disponibilizado gratuitamente para download como um arquivo executável.

The SuiteTCM Project

Integrative medicine for scientific research and clinical practice

Chinese and contemporary Western medical practices evolved on different cultures and historical contexts and, therefore, their medical knowledge represents this cultural divergence. Computerization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is being used to promote the integrative medicine to manage, process and integrate the knowledge related to TCM anatomy, physiology, semiology, pathophysiology, and therapy.

The SuiteTCM software was proposed as a collection of integrated computational models mainly derived from epidemiology and statistical sciences for computerization of Chinese medicine scientific research and clinical practice in all levels of prevention. The software includes components for:

  • Simulation of cases (SimTCM);
  • Analyses and validation of datasets (SciTCM);
  • Data management (DataTCM);
  • Clinical examination and pattern differentiation (DiagTCM) including tongue inspection (TongueTCM) and pulse palpation ( PulseTCM);
  • Intervention selection on acupuncture (AcuTCM), herbal medicine (HerbsTCM) and dietetics (DietTCM);
  • Management of medical records (ProntTCM);
  • Epidemiologic investigation of sampled data (ResearchTCM);
  • Medical education, training, and assessment (StudentTCM).

The SuiteTCM project is expected to contribute to the ongoing development of integrative medicine and the applicability of TCM in worldwide scientific research and health care. The SuiteTCM software is freely available for download as an executable application.
